Running In France
·
Jerry Hiatt |
|
|
We always enjoy
running in a country
that we are visiting
so while staying at
a B & B in Falaise,
France, we went out
the door at sunrise,
it was a very cool
morning. We found a
paved path that ran
parallel to railroad
tracks on the one
side and fields of
wheat on the other.
The paved path
turned into a
country winding road
that went on
forever....but we
didn't. |
|
Falaise Pocket
or Battle of the
Falaise Pocket
(12–21 August 1944)
was the decisive
engagement of the
Battle of Normandy.
It was formed around
Falaise in which the
German
Army Group B,
with the
7th Army
and the
Fifth Panzer Army
(formerly
Panzergruppe West)
were encircled by
the
Western Allies.
The battle is also
referred to as the
Battle of the
Falaise Gap, after
the corridor which
the Germans sought
to maintain to allow
their escape. The
battle was fierce
and the village of
Falaise was
completely destroyed
before it was all
over. In looking at
the village today
you would never know
of the destruction.
|
|
|
We enjoyed using
Falaise as a base to
tour the Normandy
area especially the
Cider Trail where
Cider is made with
an alcohol content
up to 40% ! Vive
France ( long live
France )!!!

Florida Summer Exchange
Students
French & Spanish teen
exchange students spend a
month in Florida each
summer. Several of
these students are runners
and they are looking for
running families who may be
willing to host a student
this summer. |
Asier, 15, from Spain, says
he loves long distance races
and wants to be a PE
teacher.
Clement, 15, from France,
jogs, swims and cycles for
triathlons in addition to
being a tennis player.
Romain, 16, from Paris, says
he runs twice a day and
hopes for an active/sporty
host family.
Enara, 16, from Spain, is a
soccer player who says she
occasionally jogs.
There are also non-running
girls and boys who need host
families. |
|
|
|
|
There is no cost to host.
The host families must
provide meals and a bed (the
student can share a room)
The students fly in to
Orlando on June 24th
(Spanish)/June 26th
(French) and leave their
host families on July 22nd.
Anyone interested can check
out FB page, Florida Summer
Exchange Students, or Liz
Hyers, at

call 321-292-6000. |

Muscle Sorness?
Overworking our
muscles causes tine
tears in the muscle
fibers. This
causes the muscle to
swell, and this
swelling - along
with the waste
products that result
from muscle
breakdown - causes
soreness.
We should be able to
get into shape
without getting
stiff and sore but
most of us believe
we have to overdo
it to feel as if
we've done
something! |
7 After-The-Fact Tips |
If you know you've overdone
it, take a cold shower,
bath, or swim as soon as
possible. (After a
hard run, many runners hose
their legs down with cold
water. Racehorses get
this treatment too.)
or, apply an ice pack to
your muscles for 20 to 30
minute periods, every hour.
Cold constricts (closes) the
blood vessels and keeps the
blood away from the injured
muscles. This reduces
inflammation. |
|
Avoid heat for the first 24
hours. Applying heat
to sore muscles within the
first 24 hours can increase
muscle sorness and stiffness
- even though it usually
feels good. Heat
causes the blood vessels to
dilate, which causes fluid
to accumulate (i.e.,
swelling.) |
|
Do gentle stretches, or go
for a walk or a swim.
Getting some light exercise
the day after hard exercise
helps relieve muscle
soreness. |
|
Forget "sports creams."
These make your skin feel
warm or cool, but they do
nothing for underlying
tissues. |
|
Use massage carefully.
A gentle massage one or two
days after "overdoing it"
increases blood circulation
and promotes healing.
Massaging your muscles too
soon or too vigorously can
increase soreness. |
|
Listen to your body.
Pain is your body's way of
telling you that you overdit
it. Slow down.
Take it easy. :Just do
it" - gradually. |

Blessings and good wishes to
Patrick & Kathi Johnson
as they leave our area.
Their new home in
Waynesville, NC in complete,
their Ormond Beach home is
sold and they are awaiting
moving day! Patrick
ends 30 years of service to
the health industry and
Kathy a 28 year nurse at
Halifax Health. Many
memories flood my mind and
the one that stands out most
is the day they both ran
from our home - 25 years
ago. It was their
first meeting and the rest
is history. Good
friends! We hate to
see them go but they are
going to a beautiful spot in
God's Country and I'm sure
will come back often to
visit us. You two will
be missed! |
