New State
Rep
• Welcome
Todd
Neville
as RRCA
North
Florida
State Rep.
Todd
replaces
long-time
State Rep
Michael
Bowen who is
taking a
hiatus from
his
volunteer
duties as a
State Rep.
Michael has
done an
excellent
job in
keeping up
with and
informing
all the
North
Florida
running
clubs of the
RRCA and all
its
functions.
He will be
missed and
we look
forward to
his return.
|
 |
| |
|
|
Most of you
probably already
know Todd
Neville.
Todd lives in
the St.
Augustine,
Florida and has been a longtime
active member of
the Ancient City
Road Runners
(the "ACRR"). He

and expanded
that service as
a board member
of the American
Association of Running Clubs
(merged with the RRCA in 2005)
and as the
Treasurer of the
RRCA in
2004-2005.
|
| |
|
He started his
running career
at 10 years of
age and has been
running
consistently
since then. The
highlight of his
running career
was when he ran
2:30:12 at the
2009 Chicago
Marathon after
placing 12th
overall and the
3rd American in
the 2008 San
Antonio Rock n
Roll Marathon. |
| |
|
Todd is an audit
partner of
Taylor, Wainio &
Neville, P. A. He also serves as the
Campaign Treasurer/Steering Committee Member
for Florida House of Representatives
District 20 member Bill Proctor. He is
treasurer of the St. Johns County Chamber of
Commerce and serves on several boards. |

ARE YOU READY
FOR THE RACING SEASON? |
| |
|
 |
|
September marks the
beginning of a
series of
organized
running events
in Central
Florida.
It is a great
time to lace up
your running
shoes after the
hot summer.
If you are not
already into a
'base' building
program you can
start one now.
These are miles
that are run
somewhere
between 60 to 75
percent of your
maximum heart
rate.
Build slow and
smart to stay
injury free. |
| |
|
During the racing season, you can
pick and choose from many well
organized races from 5K's to the
marathon. You may find a race
in your hometown or choose to travel
to Orlando to participate in one of
Track Shacks Grand Prix races or
north to Jacksonville. No
matter which direction you go, you
will find a well organized race run
on a certified course. Visit
www.daytonabeachcombers.com/calendarraces.htm
to choose a race. |
|
 |
|
And just as important
as your running, is your rest. REST
includes sleep and scheduled days off
from running. REST is intended as a
recovery from intense training. Sleep
allows your body to
repair itself from the rigors of
training. |
| |
|
Are you ready
for football?

Pimiento Cheese
Make this crowd-pleaser
in minutes--but every
step counts, so no
fudging!
 |
|
Easy and
delicious for football parties! |
| |
|
1 1/2
cups mayonnaise (Hellman's
or Dukes |
1 cup
chopped pecans |
|
1 (4 oz)
jar diced pimiento,
drained |
1 (8-oz)
block extra-sharp
Cheddar Cheese |
|
|
1
teaspoon Worcestershire
sauce |
1 (8 oz)
block sharp Cheddar
Cheese |
|
1 teaspoon
finely grated onion |
Celery sticks
and assorted crackers |
|
1/4 teaspoon
ground red pepper |
|
| |
|
Make the mayo
mixture. In a large
bowl, stir together
mayonnaise, diced pimiento,
Worcestershire sauce, grated
onion and ground red pepper
until well blended. |
| |
|
Toast the
pecans. Toasting
brings out the rich flavor
of the nuts. Preheat
your oven to 350ْ
Bake pecans in a single
layer in a shallow pan 8 to
10 minutes or until toasted
and fragrant, stirring halfway through.
(stirring helps to ensure
even browning) |
| |
|
Shred the
cheese. Texture
matters. Using the
small side of a box grater,
finely shred extra-sharp
Cheddar cheese. Then
use the large side of the
grater to coarsely shred
Sharp Cheddar cheese.
Fresh cheese makes a
difference. |
| |
|
Stir.
Add pecans and shredded
cheeses to mayo mixture,
stirring until blended.
You can store it in the
refrigerator up to 1 week.
Serve with celery sticks and
assorted crackers, or make a
grilled pimiento cheese
sandwich in a skillet or
panini press. |

 |
Jeanie grew up in St.
James, NY which is on Long Island. She was 2nd. of
7 children. She moved to Florida in 1975 and
started working for Florida Power & Light in 1982. She
has two sons, two step sons and four granddaughters.
She finally got her little girls. Jeanie and
hubby, Ron Heaton, moved to Port Orange in 1999.
Ron retired a few years ago and now it's Jeanie's turn.
Jeanie started running
As kids the usual games
were played -
volleyball, skating,
baseball, dodge ball,
but no running. She mentioned to someone
at work she was running,
they talked her into a
5K and she was hooked.
She has made some good
friends along the way
and met some interesting
people. She
also has run into some pot
holes during this time.
Normally her running
gets sidelined about
summer time when storms
move in and work
interferes with her
schedule so she tries to
do her marathon training
on the off season. |
| |
|
Jeanie had planned to run
the Cleveland Marathon in
May 2010. The marathon
fell on her 60th birthday
and she was in great shape.
She had done all her
training, completed all her
long runs and had one to go.
With 12 days left the
unthinkable happened!
A freak accident. A
missed step and severely
sprained ankle took her 'out
of the running' (literally)
A huge disappointment to
have to miss the marathon.
Recovery has been 12 long
weeks. Jeanie's a
tough gal so after a few
days of making Ron's
life miserable, she put
Cleveland in back of her and
has now focused on a
December marathon. |
 |
|
Jeanie has run 526 races in
her 30 years of running.
13 were marathons. She
ran the Inaugural Disney
Marathon in 1994 and 6
Disney's after that.
Jeanie's favorite marathon
was the Outer Banks OBX
Marathon. The run is
pretty low key and you don't
have to be in the corral
hours ahead of time, varied
terrain mostly flat,
coastal, scenic and
incredible community and
spectator support. Her
present goal is to run a
race in every State. She is
up to 16.
Jeanie's PR's include 5K -
22:06, 10K - 45:10, 1/2
marathon - 1:44:40 and
marathon 4:01.
In 1990 she was the 3rd.
female masters in the
Florida State Championship
5K and in 2008 she qualified
for Boston which was on her
Bucket List. |
 |
| |
|
|
 |
Volunteer: A
person who performs or
offers to perform a service
voluntarily.
Jeanie Burgess is
truly a volunteer. She
calls BEFORE she is
asked. She has
volunteered for RayZ
Awareness and Paint The
Towne every year and she
always calls ahead of time
to offer her services.
She is dependable, efficient
and fun to work with.
Some other things you may
not know about Jeanie.
She has traveled twice on
the back of a motorcycle to
Arkansas/Texas and back.
As long as she can
take her running shoes and
coffee pot it works for her |
|
|
A
few things Jeanie has learned
over the years: |
|
1.
Your body slows
down around age 50 so take
advantage of your youth |
| |
|
2.
Nobody cares about how fast or
slow you are running. Nobody
will remember your times but
you. The main thing is
that you are out there doing it.
To paraphrase Ron "it's not the
big whoop". |
|
|
3. Be grateful just to be out there breathing the
fresh air (even if it's awfully hot and humid) You
really appreciate this when you are injured and cannot run. |
|
|
|
4. Appreciate your training partners for putting up
with your tales of joys, woes and frequent bathroom stops on
long runs. |

He then headed to
California for 10 days where he
visited his son, watched some
baseball, played golf on some of the
best golf courses in the US and ran
the Napa to Sonoma Wine Country 1/2
marathon on July 18. Great

free wine glass and 20 wineries with
tasting after the race. The
race is now on Jim's 'top 10
favorites'.

old sister they did not know about.
As family history's go, the answers may
never be known but

in general anad boomer distance runners in particular were heirs
both to the warrior mentality of their World War II veteran
fathers and the new consciousness of the 1960s and 70s.
Both was of thinking were essentially idealistic and challenged
us to adopt causes greater than ourselves. The marathon
served as an ideal outlet for both types of energy.
