USAT&F
Level II Exam for Coaches
Jerry Hiatt |
| |
|
Over the years, runners,
especially those interested in
coaching, have asked about Level
II USAT&F Certification and the
exam. I am not sure of present
day testing but suspect it is
more of a challenge as distance
running is constantly evolving.
You must have attended the Level
I which is a one day course and
nothing like Level II. |
|
 |
|
From August 1, through August 8,
1999, I attended the USAT&F
courses at
Purdue University. It
was a great experience to return
to a college setting, bringing
back memories of many, many
years ago. The class hours were
very long starting at 8 A.M and
ending around 10 P.M. After
classes ended the “jawing”
sessions started with some of
the most interesting young
college coaches talking about
their athletes and their own
programs. It also was a time for
our group to develop a written
training program for a mythical
college runner which we
affectionately named “Jenna
Jet.” This training program was
also a part of the testing but
involved the group rather than
an individual. I was in a group
of the most talented young
college coaches, with
exceptional knowledge of the
sport. |
| |
|
|
The entire program, presented
by USAT&F, covers by far too much to
list here but to give you a
perspective of part of the Level II
exam, I have listed some of the
questions of which 2 through 4 are
essay and strictly related to Sport
Psychology: |
| |
|
1. The following is a partial
list of terms that had to be
defined: |
|
Annual Plan |
Biological Age |
Chronological Age |
Competition Period |
|

Fitness |
|
Flexibility |
Intensity |
Overload Law |

|
Training Age |
Volume |
Training Ratio |
Speed Training |
|
Stamina |
Periodization |
Microcycle |
Mesocycle |
|
Macrocycle |
Specificity Law |
Modeling |
Progressive overload |
| |
|
2. Provide five (5) positive
statements that reflect your
personal philosophies and beliefs of
athletes. |
|
3. Summarize what you have
learned about each of the following
topics:
A. Self-Confidence B. Effective
Motivation C. Composure |
|
4.
Select one (1) sport psychology
principle that you have learned from
the “break out” session for your
event group. |
|
5. Select three (3) principles
that you have learned from the
psychology presentations and explain
how you would implement each into
your program or coaching style. |
|
 |
|
Should anyone have an interest in
knowing more about the program, give
me a call and I would be happy to
give more detail of what is
covered. |
| |

Note:
Coaching Course •
The RRCA will be holding a Central
Region coaching certification
September 20 & 21 in Hammond Indiana
and Western Region coaching
certifications on August 2 & 3 in Palo
Alto, CA and October 3 & 4 in Portland,
OR. The one in Portland is in
conjunction with the Portland Marathon.
The certification is designed for
coaching adult endurance runners for
road running. There are currently more
than 450 RRCA certified coaches across
the US in 41 states and in Canada. |

Cubs Night
• August
9, 2008 |
|
 |
Oh What Fun!
Cubs Night 2008 was a
big success with 68 attending
the annual picnic. It was
hot but that didn't stop the
party goers from enjoying the
beer and Sonny's BBQ picnic.
Sadly, the Cubs lost the game
but the good news was it didn't
rain this year! Many opted
out a bit early to get to a TV
to watch the Olympics!
Cubs Night Out is one of
the favorite annual outings for
the Beachcombers and is
usually held in July or August.
Plan to attend next year! |

On September 19, 2008, the Road
Runners Club of America will promote the
3rd Annual National Run@Work Day®.
The goal of
National Run@Work Day is for RRCA
members and individuals across the
country to host community based events
that encourage people to incorporate at
least thirty-five minutes of exercise
into their daily lives which can
markedly improve one's overall physical
health. This goal can be achieved by
hosting a running or walking event with
the duration of at least thirty-five
minutes before work, during lunch, or
immediately after work. Come on
Beachcombers! Promote a Run! or,
you are invited to join Mandy Rossmeyer
at Destination Daytona, 6:30 am, Sept.

DID
YOU KNOW? |
|
know |
|
Store
your opened chunks of cheese in
aluminum foil.
It will stay fresh much longer and not
mold! |
|
 |
|
Peppers
with 3 bumps on the bottom are sweeter
and better for eating. Peppers with 4
bumps on the bottom are firmer and
better for cooking. |
| |
|
Add a
teaspoon of water when frying ground
beef. It will help pull the grease
away from the meat while cooking. |
| |
To
really make scrambled eggs or omelets
rich add a couple of
spoonfuls of sour cream, cream cheese,
or heavy cream in and then beat them
up. |
| |
For a cool brownie treat, make
brownies as directed. Melt Andes
mints in double broiler and
pour over warm brownies. Let set for a
wonderful minty frosting. |
| |
Add
garlic immediately to a recipe if you
want a light taste
of garlic and at the end of the recipe
if your want a stronger taste of
garlic. |
| |
|
Leftover
snickers bars from Halloween make a
delicious dessert. Simply chop them up
with the food chopper. Peel, core and
slice a few apples. Place them in a
baking dish and sprinkle the chopped
candy bars over the apples. Bake at 350
for 15 minutes!!! Serve alone or with
vanilla ice cream. Yummm!
|
|
|
 |
|
Reheat Pizza
Heat up leftover pizza in a nonstick
skillet on top of the stove, set heat to
med-low and heat till warm. This keeps the
crust crispy. No soggy micro pizza. |
|
|
Easy Deviled
Eggs Put cooked egg yolks in a zip
lock bag. Seal, mash till they are all
broken up. Add remainder of ingredients,
reseal, keep mashing it up mixing
thoroughly, cut the tip of the baggy,
squeeze mixture into egg. Just throw bag
away when done easy clean up. |
 |
|
Expanding
Frosting When you buy a container
of cake frosting from the store, whip it
with your mixer for a few minutes. You can
double it in size. You get to frost more
cake/cupcakes with the same amount. You
also eat less sugar and calories per
serving. |
|
|
Reheating
refrigerated bread To warm
biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were
refrigerated, place them in a microwave
with a cup of water. The increased moisture
will keep the food moist and help it reheat
faster.

After
moving to Flagler in 2003 Dawn's running
career began. There was not a women's
soccer team in the area for Dawn to play
with so her brother inspired her to take up
running. She thought there must be
something more to it than running around the
soccer field so she gave it a try. She
joined the Beachcombers, started running
with different groups and got more involved
in her training doing track workouts,
running 30-40 miles per week. She
likes the longer distance, 10K to half
marathons. Her favorite race was last
year's Five Points of Life 1/2 Marathon.
It was one of those races where you feel
really 'on' and felt like you were going
really fast and not working hard.
Everything clicked. Besides, it was
held in Gainesville, her old college town,
she had a great time and a PR of 1:49. |

Last year Dawn ran the Boston Marathon for
charity as she wanted to be there when the
Women's Olympic Trials were there. She
had been working on training for a fall
marathon in hopes of qualifying for 2009
Boston when she discovered she was pregnant
so that is a goal for the future now.
She would also like to run New York. She is
also training for her first triathlon this
Labor Day Weekend as she has discovered a
love for swimming and cross training.
Possibly one day she would like to try a
half ironman but for now will stay with the
sprints. She loves trail running so we
will definitely be seeing her do an
Extra-Off-Road Triathlon. Dawns advice
to runner's is to build up slowly and
discover the joy of running. Very good
advice! Her PR's are: 22:59 5K, 48:41
10K, 1:49 Half Marathon, 4:06 Marathon. |

|
Dawn likes
to read and religion is a very important
aspect of Dawn's life. She reads the bible
daily. One of her hobbies is Yoga
which helps to keep her injury free. She has it all together.
Dawn is one mighty little athlete who has
embraced running, taken it to another level
and continues to look for ways to improve.
She has tried a little bit of it all from
the 5K to the ultra's to the marathons and
now onto the triathlons. Even little
Jack did his first ever triathlon in August.
This is a girl that is always there willing to help, willing
to give back. |

My Three Kids • Sheila Sullivan |
| |
|
Lindsey, Chris, and Ryan
began running on a local AAU track team
earlier this spring. They practiced
with the Daytona Beach Supersonics twice
a week at the Embry Riddle track. The
track was full of activity as kids
practiced for all events from the
sprints, to race walking, long jump,
high jump, hurdles, and the distance
events. The “distance kids” were
coached by Dave Dunn who has been
volunteering his time with the team for
the past 13 years. All of the kids were
very lucky to have him as a coach! |
| |
|
My kids started late in the season, so
they were only able to run in a few
meets. They ran in the District meet in
early June and then all moved on the
State meet held in Orlando later that
month. Based on their ages the longest
distances they could compete in were the
3,000 meters for Lindsey, age 12, the
1,500 for Chris, age 10, and the 800 for
Ryan, age 8. For the most part, the
longer the distance the better for my
kids! At the State meet, the top 4 in
each event moved on to the AAU Junior
Olympics. Lindsey placed fourth in the
3,000 with a time of 12:53, and Chris
was 4th in the 1,500 with a
5:25. Ryan improved his 800 time by 13 seconds with a
3:18, but he didn’t qualify. We know if
they let him run a little farther he
would have had a much better chance!! |
|
 |
 |
| |
|
All the kids continued to practice
throughout the summer. Finally at the
end of July we went to Michigan for the
AAU Junior Olympics. We had just gotten
back from vacation where everyone swam a
lot, but didn’t get in much running.
Luckily at their age running once or
twice a week seems to be enough! |
|
 |
|
The meet was held
at the stadium of Eastern Michigan
University. The stadium was huge. The
announcers called all of the races and
introduced each of the runners by name
over the loud speaker. They really made
an effort to make all of the kids feel
special. I ran into several people at
the hotel and at the meet that told my
kids how proud they should have felt
just to qualify for the Junior
Olympics. I also liked how they broke
up each of the events into heats (based
on their qualifying times) so that no
more than 16 kids would be running at
the same time. This was really nice
because it allowed the kids to run with
others at their level. Even if you
weren’t the fastest in your division,
you had a chance to be competitive or
even win your heat. |
| |
|
The morning after we arrived Lindsey ran
in the first of 2 heats of the 3,000.
She went out very fast and looked
great. By the 800 mark she was in
second place. They even announced her
name over the loud speaker! By looking
at her face you could tell that she
couldn’t believe how well she was doing
at such a big meet. It was really
exciting to watch. I’m not even sure
what place she came in. I know a few
girls passed her, but that didn’t really
seem to matter. She held on and did a
12:52 (one second faster than at the
State meet!). She gave it her all, and
we were very proud! |
|
 |
 |
 |
|
The next morning it was Chris’ turn to
run. There were 39 kids in his age
group. They broke it up into 3 heats
and Chris qualified as the 16th
and final runner in the last heat.
Once again as the race started they
introduced each of the runners by name.
After announcing Chris’ name, he pumped
his arm up in the air (as he ran!).
Chris got out fast. He ran a 2:49 800M
which was a PR. He held on and in the
last 100 meters he tried to pass a guy
in an empty space on the inside.
Unfortunately, the kid cut over and
Chris ended up getting spiked in the
leg. He then slowed to what seemed like
a stop and passed the guy on the
outside. He finished ½ second faster
than at the State meet (every little bit
counts!) and ended up 12th in
his heat and 14th
overall. What a great job he did!
|
 |
|
We had a great experience with the track
team, having a lot of fun and meeting a
lot of very nice people along the way!
The rest of our team did extremely
well. Several of the kids earned
medals, and the 4 X 100 team even earned
a gold medal! Way to go Daytona Beach
Supersonics! |

Running Away
From Home •
Carlos Andrade
always tries to mix pleasure with business. When
he is out of the country he looks for a marathon
to run. He has shared some of the most
spectacular photos of Austria, Switzerland, &
Italy. These photos are from
Interlaken - Switzerland, The Jungfrau
Marathon which is one of the toughest and most
beautiful marathons in the world. The
marathon starts in downtown Interlaken and
climbs 5,960 feet to the finish at the Kleine
Scheidegg in the Bernese Oberland area of the
Swiss Alps. The first 6 miles of the course are
flat, then the course heads upwards. Around mile
15, the course becomes so steep that most
runners walk this section of the course. The
trail is also very narrow, so it is almost
impossible to pass other runners. Carlos says if
he were to run this marathon again, he would
considered it a 15 mile race. He would go as
fast as he could for 15 miles because after that
he would have to walk. |

Good news to hear

running after a layoff for some health issues.
Also on the comeback trail,
Jack Knee

Will be good to see these two back at the races. |

Dick Dillard
is
back on dry land after a trip to Alaska with son
Mark. Running around the deck of a ship
was interesting and the people on the lower
decks loved the 'thump, thump, thump, at 7am. |

The Florida Ragnar Relay
team from Daytona are
making their plans to compete November 14 & 15.
As a group they will be running 196.1 miles.
Individually, they are running 3 legs which will
vary in length from 3 to 9 miles. It will take
roughly 30 hours to cross the state from Tampa to
Ormond Beach. Pacers are encouraged on the
course during the night hours. (4:30 pm to 7:15 am)
A night pacer can either be riding a bike along side
the runner or can run with the runner.
Bikes are prohibited during the daylight hours, but
there is nothing stating that non-registered runners
cannot run along during the day.
If you would like to participate in some way- this
is a great way to do it!! Cheering sections would
be welcome along the way also. For more
information on how you can be a part, drop Michele
an email at CheleRouse@aol.com . |

It is with sadness we
say good bye to
Sefa, Mike & little
Sena Williams
as they leave our area and embark on a new life.
Mike finished his residency in June at Halifax
Hospital and the family is now off to Australia.
We shall miss
Sefa,
her delightful accent, and having her as a running
buddy. |

We
were pleasantly surprised on our morning run August
7 when we heard a huff and puff in back of us.
We turned around to see our Nebraska member,
Trent Framke.
Trent's Mom & Dad,
Charlie & Terry
and Trent's daughter,
Morgan
were visiting Daytona and they too were surprised
when Trent
and Aimee
showed up at dinner on Wednesday evening. They
had no idea the two were coming.
Surprise!!
Trent,
who is a teacher,
had
spent a week in San Diego with the Freedom Writers
Foundation. The Freedom Writers Foundation
promotes acceptance and innovative teaching methods
in classrooms across the country. Only a
select few are selected to attend and a great honor.
Big baseball and Cubs fans, the Framke family joined
us for Cubs Night. |

years of putting in her time at Halifax Medical
Center as an RN, Kathie has retired! Still

also enjoying some of the things she has been too
busy to enjoy...such as Yoga, running, working out,
reading and spending more time with her Mom.
Patrick has a couple more years before retirement
from the Health Department and he is still in the AF
reserves. Kathie is making the adjustment with
a zest for all the things she loves to do then will
show Patrick how much fun it is! |

Vigorous Exercise Like Running
Linked To Longer Life And Less Disability In Old Age
• Check out this article that Amy Ellis has shared
with us at

According to a
Stanford University study, aging Americans who are
regular runners suffer fewer disabilities, live more
active lives and are half as likely as non-runners
to die early. Another great article
contributed by Pam Peterson. There are many
articles on an active lifestyle

Running for my Father
finishing is
more than crossing the line
In this film, you will
witness how film composer Cody Westheimer deals with the
passing of his father to a brain tumor by training for
and racing the Houston marathon in his honor. This
story, revealed over the course of a year, shows his
grief cycle as he copes with his emotion and discovers a
new way forward through his running. Original
composition and Paul Simon’s song "The Sound of Silence"
are used as well as interviews with ultramarathoners
Dean Karnazes and JB Benna. This movie will premier on
September 4th, 2008 at 7:30 PM at the Ince
Theater in Culver City, California. Learn more about
this production at the official website,
Running For My Father.com and watch for the ability
to purchase a DVD version of this film in the coming
months. |
