Valentine Prediction Fun Run • February 6,
2010 |
| |
|
It was really
windy on Saturday afternoon as folks
gathered for the clubs Valentine Prediction
Fun Run and cookout. Darrel
LaMar headed up the run, Jerry
Hiatt laid out the course,
 |

The course,
which took you over and back across the
Granada bridge, was advertised between 2.3 &
2.9. The exact distance
was 2.6 and could not be revealed until
after the run. It was a tough run with
the high winds but no one complained!
|
| |
|
Kent Smith did a great job cooking
the delicious Hot Dogs. McK's
Tavern, on Beach St., donated the
delicious beans. |

Donna
Hiatt & Karen Ellis
tallied the results. |
|
 |
|
Zany awards
were presented in various categories but the
'real' winners were Gerry Fahey for
predicting the closet time as an individual
and the team award went to Jennifer & Nikki
Schedivy. Gerry Fahey predicted 26:26,
actual time was 26:06 only 20 seconds off
and the combined time of Mother/Daughter
team, Jennifer & Nikki, was 48:16, actual
time was 49:07, a difference of 51 seconds. |

Afterburn
Rob Maxwell |
|
|
Have you ever heard the fancy
term “EPOC” that some exercise physiologists
throw around? EPOC is the acronym for Excess
Post Oxygen Consumption. Ever heard the term “afterburn”?
Afterburn does a nice job of explaining what
EPOC is. EPOC means that after a workout, your
oxygen consumption is up above the level it was
before you started exercising, and it does this
so your body can recover and return to
pre-exercise status. Why is this important?
Let me explain… |
|
ruth |
|

|
|

|
 |
|
 |
Ruth was born
and grew up in the Boston area, moved to the
Portland area of Maine when she was in middle
school. She ran track for a whole week
while in high school but felt uncoordinated and
untalented at all the events, she quit. No
one mentioned Cross Country to her which would
have been more to her liking.
Ruth's
grandparents lived in the Daytona area while she
was growing up, so she visited often. It
was a natural move for her to move here.
She is a Physical Therapist & Massage Therapist.
15 years
ago Ruth said she wouldn't run unless she was
being chased. Someone talked her into
running a 5K for charity. She was sore for
a week but figured it was good exercise so she
was hooked. |
|
|
Ruth's most
favorite race was the 2008 Boston Marathon that
she ran with her Dad. Her Dad, Ray, is a
Boston Native and they ran the whole race with a
'ginormous' smile. They stopped at every
mile marker, took pictures, and totally soaked
in the wonderful experience that father/daughter
shared, running the Boston Marathon TOGETHER.
Ruth favors
the longer distance. She doesn't warm up
until about 10 miles. She is presently on
the' injured' list but would like to do more
ultras and marathons one day. She would
like to do a 50 or 100 miler but taking one step
at a time. She would also like to run a
marathon in every state. Her marathon PR
is 3:42 run at Disney. 50K PR in
Brooksville 5:48.
Ruth enjoys
running with a group occasionally but really
favors running alone. She has solved the
world's problems in one solo long run.
She also
likes the Fun Runs from downtown.
|
 |
|
One thing many of Ruth's friends may not know
about her is the fact she loves Olivia
Newton John's 'Totally Hot' record and knows
every word. She also runs a mini animal
shelter out of her apartment. She loves
biking when the weather is warm and YOGA. |
|
|
 |
Ruth's best
advice for runner's is to NOT run through an
injury. It can come back to
haunt you down the road. She was impatient
and did not let a pelvic stress fracture heal
properly and suffers from a bone spur and
degeneration that most likely could have been
prevented with a little rest. She has
learned to be thankful for the days it doesn't
hurt and to be flexible and cut back when it
does. Yoga has helped Ruth. It's a
lot more athletic and challenging than she ever
thought. |
|
|
Although she
will not admit it, Ruth is a very special
person. Her happiness and passions come
from serving God through helping others.
She has met some amazing people while trying to
live out her passion whether in Haiti or here at
home. Ruth fell in love with Haiti
on her first trip a few years ago. Talk
about resilience. If you ever heard the
Pam Tillis song about the river and the
highway, these people are the river. They
may not try to move the obstacles but they
sure are great in getting around them and moving
on. Getting to know the people there has
changed Ruth's life. She has become very
disciplined at asking herself "Do I WANT this or
do I NEED this" whenever she goes shopping.
|
|
|
When Ruth
hears the question, "What's the one thing you
would do if money were no obstacle and you knew
you couldn't fail?" She would like to get
clean drinking water and food to everyone in the
world. Ruth says she goes with the grass
roots vision of thinking globally and acting
locally and still doesn't have a plan in place.
When Ruth hears that 30-35,000 people around the
world die of starvation every single day it
makes her ill. We all want to help others
but it is a matter of getting plugged into
something we enjoy, like exercise. Check
out some of the stories at
http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-243-297--11458-0,00.html.
Runner's helping the homeless get back on there
feet is a favorite story.
There are so many
worthy causes out there who, yes may need money,
but really need an extra set of hands and each
one of us have something to offer - some gift or
talent to share with the world. Ruth
believes that is why we are here. |
|
|
 |
 |
|
|
By the time
you read this article, Ruth will be back in
Haiti for another mission trip. With
her will be tons of shoes the Beachcombers
collected at the Valentine Prediction Fun Run
along with some running shirts that were also
contributed. The mission her church
supports is about 25 miles from Port Au Prince.
Ruth continues to fulfill her calling by helping
others. She is sharing her gift to the
world. Pretty amazing gal. |

The
SIGVARIS Athletic Recovery Sock
A growing trend among
competitive athletes is the use of compression
therapy socks to help improve their athletic
performance. Compression therapy is a hot topic in
sports media right now as a growing number of
triathletes, marathon runners and professional
sports athletes are trying compression socks during
performance to improve their results. Whether it’s
during the actual event, after the event, or even
while traveling, athletes are making graduated
compression socks part of their everyday attire.

Cucumbers
Who
knew? |
| |
1. Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need every
day, just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2,
Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6,
Folic
Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus,
Potassium and Zinc.
2. Feeling tired in the afternoon, put down the
caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber. Cucumbers are
a good source of B Vitamins and Carbohydrates that can
provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours..
3. Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a
shower? Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror,
it will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing,
spa-like fragrance.
4. Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds?
Place a few slices in a small pie tin and your garden
will be free of pests all season long. The chemicals in
the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent
undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and
make them flee the area. (WOW)
5. Looking for a fast and easy way to remove cellulite
before going out or to the pool? Try rubbing a slice or
two of cucumbers along your problem area for a few
minutes, the phytochemicals in the cucumber cause the
collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer
layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite. Works
great on wrinkles too!!! (DOUBLE WOW)
6. Want to avoid a hangover or terrible headache?
Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and wake
up refreshed and headache free. Cucumbers contain
enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish
essential nutrients the body lost, keeping everything in
equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and headache!!
7. Looking to fight off that afternoon or evening
snacking binge? Cucumbers have been used for centuries
and often used by European trappers, traders and
explores for quick meals to thwart off starvation.
8
. Have an important meeting or job interview and you
realize that you don't have enough time to polish your
shoes? Rub a freshly cut cucumber over the shoe,
its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine
that not only looks great but also repels water.
9. Out of WD 40 and need to fix a squeaky hinge? Take a
cucumber sliced rub it along the problematic hinge, and
voila, the squeak is gone!
10. Stressed out and don't have time for massage, facial
or visit to the spa? Cut up an entire cucumber and
place it in a boiling pot of water, the chemicals and
nutrients from the cucumber with react with the boiling
water and be released in the steam, creating a soothing,
relaxing aroma that has been shown the reduce stress in
new mothers and college students during final exams.
11.. Just finish a business lunch and realize you
don't have gum or mints? Take a slice of cucumber and
press it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for
30 seconds to eliminate bad breath, the phytochemcials
will kill the bacteria in your mouth responsible for
causing bad breath.
12. Looking for a 'green' way to clean your faucets,
sinks or stainless steel? Take a slice of cucumber and
rub it on the surface you want to clean, not only will
it remove years of tarnish and bring back the shine, but
is won't leave streaks and won't harm you fingers or
fingernails while you clean.
13. Using a pen and made a mistake? Take the outside of
the cucumber and slowly use it to erase the pen writing,
also works great on crayons and markers that the kids
have used to decorate the walls!! |

Not Exactly a
walk in the park
An
individual test of body and spirit, a trek of more than 26
miles across Earth's most desolate continent. The
ultimate marathon, the
Antarctica Ice Marathon.
Tony
Lombardo decided that this race was one on his 'bucket list'
so after 7 months of training on the beach sometimes up to 5
hours in soft, deep, sand, an investment of a little over
$20,000.00 ($16,000 to enter, $2,000 for equipment, $2,500
on travel) He was intrigued by Antarctica. It's
the coldest, windiest, driest and highest continent on
earth.
The
marathon took place in Antarctica's interior, not far from
the South Pole, which was drenched in 24 hours of summer
daylight in that hemisphere. He and another runner
shared a tent that got no warmer than minus 4 degrees.
|
|
Tony was the oldest participant ever, and the first
from Florida. This was a team effort and his
competitors were among some of the most accomplished
long-distance runners in the world. |
|
| |
| The
weather on marathon day, Dec. 15, was clear and warm, between
minus 10 and 20 degrees. Tony wore three pairs of socks
and special running shoes two sizes to big. Several layers
of clothes were peeled off one at a time as they became soaked
with sweat. Freezing was a major concern. So was
dehydration. |
| |
| The best
time for the marathon was 4 hrs, 46 minutes. The last
person finished in 27 hours, Tony finished in 8 1/2 hours.
No spectators lined the course. This marathon was as solo
as it gets. The goal of most of the marathoners was simply
to finish. It was an amazing experience and he feels
fortunate to be one of 100 people who have experienced it. |
| |
| Since
returning home, Tony has been recruited by a couple of the
marathoners he met for a four-person team run next spring for
six days in the Sahara Desert - the antithesis of Antarctica.
Tony said with a grin, "are you crazy?" "They said, 'No,
but we know you are.'" |

| Near
record low temperatures and freezing rain met runners
participating in the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend events.
However, the cold temperatures did not prevent Disney from
staging the largest Marathon Weekend since the event’s inception
in 1994. Nearly 55,500 runners registered for one of the races
over the weekend, making it one of the top two largest running
events in the nation. Steady sleet, 30 degree
temperatures, and an occasional snow flurry greeted almost
23,000 registered runners gathered for the half marathon early
Saturday morning, January 9th. Not your typical Florida weather.
On Sunday, January 10th, approximately 24,000 runners toed the
line for the 17th Walt Disney World Marathon. There was no
precipitation for the 5:40am start, but the temperature was well
below 30 degrees for a frigid start.
The weather didn't prevent a
bunch of local runner's from completing the Disney Marathon
and/or 1/2 and Goofy. I can't imagine running a 1/2
marathon one day and a full marathon the next but our brave and
strong did! Leading the pack for the Goofy Challenge was
Jimmy Wyatt. Jimmy ran for the Parent Project for Muscular
Dystrophy for their sons organization and was ecstatic over
personally raising $3200. The entire group raised $297,000
for research for a cure for Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy.
Jimmy not only ran the 1/2 in 1:34 bur turned around the next
day and PR'd in the marathon a time of 2:58. What an
accomplishment!! |

The best running movie of all

Fire on the Track
is a documentary on Steve Prefontaine, America's top distance runner
in the 1970's whose front running style, brashness, and American
records from 2,000m to 10,000m captivated the American track public
like no other distance runner. He narrowly missed an Olympic medal
in 1972 and then his life was tragically cut short in a car
accident. Fire on the Track
is excellently produced, has in depth footage of the 1972 Olympic 5k
final, with comments from Prefontaine's competitors. |
