DEHYDRATION

Jerry Hiatt

Over the past several days we have had extremely hot weather with the heat index reaching as high as 105 degrees. When the heat index gets this high it can be very dangerous and should be given a great deal of respect. That means you should consider maintaining hydration throughout the day not just when you go out to run. In addition to water, a runner should also consider a good sports drink that will help in maintaining/replacing electrolyte balance in their system. Studies have been done indicating a loss of 2 percent of body weight leads to about a 6 percent reduction in running performance.

I work with several runners, some of which are starting to prepare for their marathons in the fall.  Even though I know they are aware of the need to stay hydrated, I catch myself reminding them over and over to drink, drink, drink.  I have found it to be of benefit to drink a sports drink during their longer runs and especially within 30 minutes of finishing their workouts.  If a runner is going to do short runs they should still be certain they stay hydrated.  Some runners prefer ingestion of Gu Energy Gel during their long runs and doing this is fine but still maintaining hydration is very important.

The importance of hydration enhances a runner’s ability to train better which leads to better quality workouts and improved conditioning.  From a physiological standpoint as a runner dehydrates the blood volume decreases because of sweating and this means less blood returns to the heart.  Less blood being pumped by your heart means less oxygen reaching your working muscles and this leads to less energy aerobically and the runner will run at a slower pace. This also means recovery for the next run will be slower.  The other factor to consider is the rise of core temperature.

I highly recommend a runner consider doing their workouts early morning. However, if that is not possible then late evening should be considered as these are the cooler parts of the day. Not only is this beneficial in helping to maintain hydration but also keeping that Florida Sun from harming the skin.                                                                                           Safe & Happy Running Jerry Hiatt

Ken Bendy

A befitting farewell from RRCA President, Brent Ayer

Every president of the Road Runners Club of America is given the discretion of recognizing one or two individuals each year for contributions made to the organization and to the promotion of the sport.

This year, on March 28 during the final evening of our 51st convention, I was pleased to present Ken Bendy with the RRCA President’s Award.  Ken’s service to his clubs and to the RRCA spans decades and I could not do it justice in a limited amount of space.

I served a term as Eastern Region Director that overlapped one of Ken’s as Southern Region Director.  I have never felt so inadequate in my life.

The shear number of email updates, regional newsletters, website contacts, visits to clubs, and championship events dwarfed anything I was doing.  I lived in dread of his next email update that would expose my under performance.

In the late 80’s and early 1990’s, I served on the board of the RRCA as Treasurer and I have been either a board member or an observer for 25 of the organizations fifty-one years.  As part of our 50th anniversary celebration last year, I interviewed every living president.  Based on what I have learned and observed, I believe that Ken is simply the best regional director in RRCA history.

His passion for promoting the sport and his dedication to the state representatives and club leaders of the Southern Region are unmatched.  We appreciate everything he has done for the RRCA and we will miss him greatly as a member of the national board.

Healthy Eating And Summer Fun!

With temptation at every rest-stop, beachfront grill and hip new restaurant, it's difficult to eat healthy while on vacation. But there’s no reason to stop your progress just because you’re taking a well needed rest. The key is to find the happy medium between avoiding junk foods and an occasional indulgence while you’re away. There are several strategies and tricks I’d like to share to help you avoid summer weight gain while away (or even at home!).

Breakfast and lunch alternatives - Without a doubt, breakfast is still the most important meal of the day and should never be skipped. If you are staying in a hotel with a continental breakfast, stay away from fatty pastries, muffins and donuts, and stick to fresh fruits, hard boiled or scrambled eggs or fiber rich cereals instead. If you are on your own for breakfast, there are always healthy alternatives on any restaurant menu. You can’t go wrong with eggs, wheat toast and fresh fruit.

Eating out, not pigging out – While away, most likely the majority of your meals will be eaten at restaurants. Just remember that healthy choices are now offered everywhere. The main concerns with eating out are portion sizes and making the right choices. Stay away from anything fried or with heavy sauces and go with items that are grilled, broiled or steamed. Most importantly, just because the food is in front of you does not mean you have to finish your plate. Stop eating when you feel full.

Tasty treats – While away, your activity level may be higher than usual. You may be walking around or swimming at the pool and burning more calories. With all those extra calories burned there's room for a little bit of indulgence. Every vacation spot has unique foods and treats that you shouldn't pass up. Once again, it is all about how much you eat, so limit your treats to one per day.

Road trip healthy eating - Eating healthy and road trips are two phrases that are not commonly used together, but it is possible. It is too easy to pull over and grab a combo meal or pick up some chips at the gas station. There are alternatives to both of these. Pack a cooler full of healthy snacks like fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy sandwiches, yogurt, granola, trail mix and lots of water so you remain hydrated. If you must stop at a fast food place, consider healthy options like a salad or a fruit cup as substitutions for fries. Or go with a grilled chicken alternative

Eating healthy while away from home is easy to do if you keep these strategies in mind. You are on vacation, so it's okay to indulge now and then, as long as you make healthy decisions the rest of the time. Think of how good it will feel when you don’t gain “vacation weight”!

Peggy Smith

Sue O'Malley, the oldest of four children,  was born in Scranton, Pa., and grew up in Stroudsburg, Pa.  She attended East Stroudsburg State College.  She and J.J. were married in 1991 and moved to Watkins Glen, NY.  They relocated to Homestead in 1998 and her husbands job brought them Port Orange in 2001.  Sue and J.J. have one daughter, Erin, who is going into her senior at Father Lopez.    Sue is a substitute teacher and head Cross -Country and track coach at Lopez.

Sue is in her 35th. year of running.  She started at the age of 14 when she went out for the high school team.  Her friends were running and she was too small and uncoordinated to play other sports.  She is still the school record holder in the mile (5:24) and two mile (11:19);  Seven-time Centennial League mile and two mile champ, district runner-up seven times, went to states four times in high school. The school didn’t have cross-country, so Sue competed as an individual and won the district title her junior year and went to states.   In 2002 Sue backed off on her training/racing for five years due to teaching schedule and taking care of Erin in her pre-teen years.  Family was more important.

At East Stroudsburg State College (now university) Sue ran both track and cross-country. She was the top X-C runner all four years, and won the Army Invitational twice and went to nationals in Idaho. In track, she was a seven-time state champ in the 5,000 and 10,000 and was All-American in the 10,000 (35:55) her junior year.

Sue's most memorable race was the U.S. Olympic Trials for the inaugural women’s marathon in 1984 (my 25th anniversary) in Olympia, Wash. She finished 50th after being seeded 85th. She was the first Pennsylvanian with a time of 2:43:01, her PR. She also won the Marine Corps Marathon in 1983 to qualify with a 2:45.

Her recent favorite event was competing in the Emory Riddle Spikes Invitational Meet, running the 5,000 meters, open and collegiate women. She led start to finish. With one lap to go, all the local high school and collegiate teams came out to cheer her on, which was a moving experience.

Sue's favorite distance is the 15K or 1/2 marathon.  She trains 7 days a week logging in about 70 miles per week.  She does track once a week, tempo runs and tries to race every weekend.  She enjoys doing track workouts and tempo runs with a group but daily training runs, her shadow is her companion.

Sue has a couple of running goals.  She would like to be a world masters champion someday on the track 5K or 10K.    She would also like to compete in a foreign country and do missionary work with children who like to run. She would like to someday be a college coach in either track or cross country (or both), so she can give back.  She has some impressive times that would qualify her to meet her goals.  Sue's PR's:  5K – 17:11 (18:45 masters). 10K, 35:55 (38:45 masters) ˝ marathon, 1:18 (1:28 masters), marathon, 2:43:01 (3:07 masters)

Sue enjoys cycling, reading and watching movies with the family.  Like all women, she loves to shop!  She likes the idea the Beachcombers are for runner's of all levels and abilities and they are very friendly both running and away from running.  She enjoys the social aspect of the club.

I bet you didn't know Sue was once on a Wheaties box.  She was the Florida winner in a contest in search for every day heroes.  She also carried the torch for the 2001 Winter Olympics in Ft. Lauderdale.  Sue collects Snoopies and Olympic and Prefontaine memorabilia.  She has autographed running dolls of Shorter, Rodgers, Viren, Waitz, Benoit, Mel Rosen.  She also helped start a running camp for kids who couldn’t afford to go to camp for the Miami Road Runners Club (which continues to today).

Sue continues to set goals.  She has been the overall women’s winner in 199 races!  200 coming up soon.  She was the overall female winner at the 2008 Palmer College Paint The Towne and 2009 RayZ Awareness.  In May she won her 5th race in a row at the Oviedo Teal Ribbon Race.

Sue's advice to runners?  Never give up – there is no finish line! Be patient and listen to your body. Visit the mecca of running – Eugene Oregon.

Sue turns 50 next summer and is looking forward to moving up into a new age group.  She has been blessed with the ability to run and has been an amazing inspiration to women at all levels and age. She is grateful for the friends she has made along the way.  She has goals, a sense of purpose in running and she continues to strive to get better - and she does.  Sue is also a super volunteer.  Running a race then volunteering afterwards is not unusual for Sue.  She's a very generous, caring and thoughtful individual.  Pretty neat gal!

Something Down The Drain?  Retrieve it Without a Wrench

An amazing trick! 1-minute video shows you how to easily retrieve anything that went down the drain without a pipe wrench or a plumber.

This has nothing to do with running but the coolest household tip!

  http://www.familyhack.com/2007/08/29/drain-tip

Another cool site.  Educational and fun.  as you run your curser over the people, it tells you who they are and provides a link to Wikipedia (if you double click) to get more information on each person. This could keep you occupied for hours.   http://cliptank.com/PeopleofInfluencePainting.htm

Grace & Peter Rowe share this photo of their grandchildren, The Brooklyn Burkes.  Twins, Charlie & Jimmy surround sister Jeanie.

The Rowe's are new grandparents.  Ozzie Earley Rowe was born June 6 to son Jimmy & Jessica.  That makes 4!

Congratulations to the family!

Tis the season when Beachcombers are coming and going!  Donna & Sidi Lemnouni spent a couple of weeks in May in the North Georgia mountains enjoying the spring weather.  Sharon Sheppele spent time in Oregon for her daughter's bridal shower.  Sharon has moved back to East Volusia and has purchased a home in Ormond.  So long, good bye, farewell, adieu to Matt Hizer who has moved back to Ohio and  Erin Franklin who has moved to Vancouver, BC.  The Beachcombers will miss you both!  Howard Vann recently vacationed in Hawaii, Donna & Jerry Hiatt celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in a castle in Scotland, and Sharon, Merrill, Reed & Jamie Lay are headed for Hong Kong for a couple of weeks.  Patrick Sweeney keeps on the move visiting friends and family all over.  He and Barbara recently stopped off in New Jersey and visited the college where Patrick worked.  They had their silver dinner followed by an invitation by the President for breakfast.  Patrick participated in the graduation procession which was delightful.  From there they went to New Hampshire and Maine.  Patrick was surprised by a party celebrating his 80th birthday in Durham, N.H. with over 50 friends and family attending.  Then onto Patrick's 50th College reunion for 3 days at St. Anselm College.  Life is good, Patrick is getting younger each year and loves this life in the Villages (when he's not visiting the kids).

Amy & John share some photos of their garden and crops and John relaxing after a hard days work!

Jack Knee writes he is going into training for Palmer College Paint The Towne, November 8.  Carol Hansen-Vessa will be spending two weeks in Innsbrook, England as part of the MB program at Stetson.  Nancy Snapp reports Fred is coming along after his knee replacement surgery and is in rehab.  Kit Doughney ran a 1:45 1/2 marathon in Brooklyn, NY, May 30, that qualified her for entry into the NY Marathon.  She took first place in her age group as well as shattering the time of 1:50 she needed to qualify.  Way to go Kit Charlie & Kathy Norris returned from Maryland with grandson Ben the night of Cubs Night Out.  They were looking forward to bringing Ben to the game however, the long trip from Maryland and rain that evening they never made it to the picnic.

Beachcombers Get Down & Dirty

Kids will be kids and the Beachcombers are playing dirty again!  Playing in the mud that is at the Muddy Buddy Orlando,  May 9, 2009

This unique trail running and biking race was fun and challenging for everyone. Both beginning athletes and experienced racers alike had a great time along the course and through the obstacles, especially in the infamous Mud Pit!

Each race features a 6-7 mile course and 5 obstacles. At the start of the race, one team member will run and one will ride the bike. At the 1st obstacle, the rider will drop the bike, complete the obstacle, and begin running. The runner will arrive, complete the obstacle, find their bike, and begin riding. Teams will continue leapfrogging each other through the entire course. At the end of the race, racers will crawl through the infamous Mud Pit crossing the finish line together!

The Ultimate Human Race

Way to go dude!  Rick Ingerson completed the Comrades Marathon in Durban in May.  The first Comrades Marathon took place on 24th May 1921, Empire Day, starting outside the City Hall in Pietermaritzburg with 34 runners. It has continued since then every year with the exception of the war years 1941-1945, with the direction alternating each year between Pietermaritzburg and Durban, the so called up & down runs.  The Comrades Marathon is a cherished national treasure and attracts thousands of runners, spectators and television viewers every year.

The more I run, the more I want to run, and the more I live a life conditioned and influenced and fashioned by my running. And the more I run, the more certain I am that I am heading for my real goal: to become the person I am. -George Sheehan, M.D.

Running is a road
to self awareness
and self reliance.
You can push yourself to extremes
and learn the harsh reality of
your physical and mental
limitations
or
coast quietly down
a solitary path
watching the Earth
spin at your feet.
But, when you are through,
exhilarated and exhausted,
at least for the moment
everything seems right
in the world.
